Barnegat, NJ
Historic Barnegat retains much of its early charm, thanks to
those who have worked hard to preserve the character of its old buildings.
Barnegat's town center (Route 9), with its park, gazebo, and antique shops
and boutiques housed in Victorian homes, draw not only tourists, but
residents from nearby towns for shopping.
The public dock is a site for township gatherings, including boat races, parades, concerts, Founder's Day fun, and the annual Pirates Day festivities, or just used for a peaceful day of crabbing and fishing.
Barnegat has a active homeowners group. The Barnegat Association of Taxpayers, with Murray Weinberg as president, meets at the community center behind town hall monthly. The community also has an active Historical Society, which meets in the old Methodist Church on East Bay Avenue.
The two groups are currently busy, along with township leaders and others, in planning a celebration marking Barnegat's 150th Anniversary this year. The event will run over Memeorial Day weekend and include a parade, concert and fireworks display over the bay.
Last year, the new Barnegat branch of the Ocean County Library (698-3331) opened on West Bay Avenue, and renovations are continuing on the Town Hall.
Barnegat is a sending district of the the Southern Regional School District, which handles students from the 6th -12 grades. Students in earlier grades attend one of the four elementary schools in the township.
The Township Committee is comprised of Mayor Kendal Klix, Deputy Mayor Vic DiGangi, Dolores Coulter, Joe Vill, and Raymond Barrett. The township administrator is Veronica Jasina.
The municipal complex is at 900 West Bay Ave. (698-7832) The Township Committee meets the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.
