The area now known as Eagleswood was settled in 1705 by Jarbus Pharo, but
was not officially recognized as a township until 1874. At that time, Beach
Haven over on Long Beach Island was part of the township.
Eagleswood Township derives its name from the numerous eagles that nested in the area when it was founded. Although most of the eagles have long since disappeared, the townships large, unspoiled natural areas still harbor a variety of birds and wildlife. In fact, a portion of the township's wetlands bordering the Barnegat Bay lies in the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
During Colonial days, the major local industry was shipbuilding. Schooners sailed out of West Creek, as did the boats of pirates and privateers who hid in the small coves along the bay. In succeeding years, oystering and clamming joined boatbuilding as important occupations in the township. One of the states most significant commercial cranberry bogs was located at Stafford Forge.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, West Creek became a host community for the many sportsmen who traveled to the region for fishing and hunting. The first Barnegat Bay sneakbox, a unique, shallow-draft hunting boat that is still used today, was made by West Creek resident Hazelton Seaman in 1836.
One of the township's more unusual historical attractions is the famed "chair house" located just outside West Creek on Route 9. The unusual three-story, Victorian-era building, which recently was given a facelift by its new owners, originally served as a water tower in Holgate, but was moved to its present location in the 1930s. Albert Lindholm, who owned it at the time, is credited with placing the trademark chair on the roof, and some say it indicates the dwelling was once the home of a circus acrobat.
Eagleswood has a very active historical society and is very sensitive about maintaining the township's beautiful old buildings and quaint Main Street area. Even the municipal building is housed in the former two-room schoolhouse. Although the township would like to see more ratables in town, it is not about to sacrifice its charm.
The Township Committee is comprised of Mayor Kenneth Holman, Deputy Mayor John Woodland and Committeeman Greg Johnson.
The Eagleswood Township Elementary School on Route 9 is home to pupils in kindergarten through sixth grade. The superintendent and school principal is Thomas Resch. Middle and high school students attend Pinelands Regional schools on Nugentown Road in Little Egg Harbor. Superintendent of Schools is Clement Crea.
