Harvey Cedars, NJ

The Borough of Harvey Cedars is located about 3 miles north of the causeway on Long Beach Island. In the early years, Harvey Cedars' northern end, from Sussex Ave. to 87th St., was a small community known as High Point. On December 11, 1894 when Harvey Cedars seceded from Union Township (today's Barnegat Township) and officially became an independent borough, High Point remained its own community. By the 1930's the US Postal Service demanded that the name High Point be dropped and Harvey Cedars officially expanded to the north.

The origin of High Point's name probably came from Mr. Isaac Lee who was the first to build a house in High Point. It is believed that he chose his location because it was 'a high point of land where the water did not flood'. Mr. Lee's house still remains on 74th Street, now named Lee Ave. The High Point Volunteer Fire Dept. located on 80th Street is the only reminder of that community name.

Unlike High Point, Harvey Cedars' name isn't that obvious. The stories and rumors of a man named Harvey who lived in a shack among the cedar trees are not true. In Colonial times, Harvey Cedars was the center of Long Beach Island's salt hay industry. In the summer months, the heat combined with the mosquitoes and greenhead flies made harvesting hay an exhausting job. Comfort was found in the shade of the many cedar trees on the island, hence the name Harvest Cedars. The name Harvest Cedars wasn't easy to pronounce and changed to Harves-Cedars, Harv-a-Cedars, and finally Harvey Cedars.

The Harvey Cedars Activity Committee sponsors annual events such as Craft Day by the Bay, Dog Day Race, the Arts & Crafts Festival, and the Blue Claw Crab Race. Another favorite event is the 4th of July fireworks over the bay at the Municipal Park located at Long Beach Blvd. & W. Salem Ave. Concerts, lectures and other events are also held at the park and at the Fire House.

Harvey Cedars' Borough Hall, Police Station and Post Office are located at 76th St. & Long Beach Blvd. The borough's Board of Commissioners are Judith Gerkens, Mayor and Dept. of Public Works and Public Property, John Oldham, Dept. of Public Safety and Public Affairs, and Daniel (Pat) O'Connell, Dept. of Revenue and Finance. The Borough Clerk is Gloria Shannon. The Borough Hall number is (609) 494-2843; Non-Emergency Police (609) 494-3036; Public Works (609) 494-6905. The Borough Hall is open Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon.
