Do you own a computer and a modem with communications software?
Then you can search the on-line catalogs of the Ocean County Library in the
comfort of your own home with the Dial PAC system!
The system is available continuously except during periods of
routine maintenance, usually Fridays between 5:00 and10:00 pm.
WHAT YOU NEED
- -- A computer with a 14.4K BPS or slower modem
- -- Communications software capable of emulating a VT100 or ADDS Viewpoint
terminal with the following parameters:
- * 8 data bits
- * 1 stop bit
- * Parity-None
- * Full Duplex
If the line you call is busy, the system will automatically connect
you to one of the other lines. You will only receive a busy signal if all
four lines are engaged.
DIAL PAC PHONE NUMBERS:
- (908) 341-6043
- (908) 341-8507
- (609) 296-6444
- (609) 758-7905
If the line you call is busy, the system will automatically connect
you to one of the other lines. You will only receive a busy signal if all
four lines are engaged.
LOGGING ON TO DIAL PAC
- Use your communications software to dial into our computer.
- Once you are connected, hit RETURN until you get a login prompt.
- At the login prompt, enter search in lower case letters. If you make a
mistake typing, hit RETURN until you get a new login prompt.
- Choose the terminal emulation you are using from the menu. VT100 is the
preferred choice. Almost all communications software will emulate a VT100.
Some will emulate ADDS View-point (using ADDS VP 60 or 90). The WYSE 50
terminal - ADDSVP enhanced mode should be avoided unless you are connecting
using an actual terminal.
- After you choose a terminal type, you will be shown two test screens to
determine if you have chosen the correct emulation. Follow the on-screen
instructions. For the second test screen, be aware that you will probably
not be able to see all of the video effects listed.
- If you answered yes at both test screens, you will be logged on and the
Dial PAC greeting screen will appear. From this poi nt on, you can search
the catalog just the same as if you were at a PAC terminal at the Library.
LOGGING OFF DIAL PAC
Quit back to the Main Menu. Choose Logoff, or enter Q [RETURN].
When the logoff is complete you will be instructed that you can now
disconnect (hang-up) your modem .
PLACING A HOLD USING DIAL PAC
Placing a hold on Dial PAC is basically the same as placing one using a PAC
terminal in the library, except that you must indicate at which branch you
wish to pick up the material.
- Enter PH (place a hold) at the first screen where the title you are
requesting is Iisted by itself .
- Enter the last seven numbers of your library card barcode.
- Choose the number of the branch at which you would like to pick up the
material.
- Verify the pick-up location at the bottom of the screen and hit return
to place the hold.
- If you have any outstanding fines, you will not be able to place a hold
until they are resolved.
HELPFUL HINTS
- If the login prompt is in capital letters, enter [CONTROL] d until the
login returns to lower case. Then proceed with a normal login.
- If you do not get a login and the screen appears scrambled, try entering
Q [RETURN] several times untiI you get a login prompt. Then proceed with a
normal login.
- If you still have problems, contact Ocean County Library Automation at:
(908) 349-6200, ex. 32 or (609) 971-0514, ex. 32.
As a consideration to other patrons, please limit your searching to
fifteen minutes per session.
