Fluke Tournament

The big story of the week is the JCAA New Jersey State Wide Fluke Tournament on Saturday. The Tournament begins at dawn and any qualifying fish must be weighed in by 5:00pm sharp. The largest two fish weighed in between the two Beach Haven ports (Scott's Bait & Tackle & Fisherman's Headquarters (609) 494-5739) will win the first place port prize of $1000.00!!! Second place will receive a Penn rod slc2260ax with a Penn 310GTi reel =$120.00 combo. Third place winner will receive a Garmen GPS model 40. Good luck all anglers; have a safe tournament.

Where can I catch a big Fluke this Saturday??? Oh, boy. The larger Fluke are usually caught in the deeper water even though it is the colder water. Try fishing in the area of 126 marker buoy in the Inland Waterway or in the deeper water in front of the bulkhead of the Fish Factory. Drifting in the area of 120 marker has potential as well. When fishing in deeper water, top and bottom style rigs are a good choice. The bait choice for a T & B rig is long thin cut squid strips with a minnow for action. Soaking the squid strips in Shedder Oil helps to catch Fluke, although is was developed to catch Weakies. When fishing in this deeper water in the Spring, be aware that you will catch very few Fluke. However, when one is usually caught, it is usually a big one. Will it be big enough to be a tournament winner??? We will see. There were some Fluke caught in the mouth of the Mullica River today. The report I heard was of 17 fish with 9 keepers. It is not the greatest catch in the world, but not bad considering the wind this morning.

Supplies

We stocked our freezers to the maximum this week with ice cubes and block ice for your celebration needs. The ice is in a separate freezer just to the left of our front door. If you buy five 8 pound bags of ice cubes, we charge you a discounted price of $7.00. Just ask for a sleeve of ice--it is double wrapped--and we will carry one out from our back freezer and place it into your car or truck.

Brabbing

Crabbing in the lagoons is good and bad. The trap behind our store caught 1 crab today. Yet, the trap behind my Mystic Island home has been consistently catching crabs all week. Very few are jumbos; many are keepers. I hear it from several customers how great the crabbing is and the next customer through the door says how poorly the crabbing is. It all depends on your location. Hopefully, your lagoon is one of the ones that has an abundance of crabs in it.

Bluefish

Ocean bluefishing has not been feasible because the wind hasn't stopped for weeks. As soon as I hear anything good, I'll update. Bluefishing in the bay is still best done by anchoring the boat and chumming with bunker chum and casting out monofilament float rigs. Graveling Point and Pebble Beach area have been good places to fish. A lot of boat traffic will stop the bluefish bite, so get out early.

Wrecks

Wreck fishing is pretty much the same story as the ocean Bluefishing. Rough seas have kept most vessels at the dock. During a couple of the calmer days, I did get some reports of Seabass on the Little Egg Reef sight. A couple of Charter Boats out of Oyster Creek also reported good catches of Seabass on their favorite wrecks.
