First Striper Caught
The best news of the week is that the first striper was caught
off Graveling Point and it was a keeper. Ed Varga...the guy who
captured the $100 bucks for weighing in the first bluefish caught off
Graveling Point last year(April 24, 1# 14oz)...toted in his 13 pound
31 1/2 inch $100 dollar striper on March 22. Congratulations Ed.
Last years fish was caught by Ken Smith on March 27. Kens fish
weighed in at 30 pounds 8ounces, evidence that some good size fish do
make an appearance at the point. Blood worms are the bait that works
the best on those early spring bass on Graveling Point.
Free Tide Charts
Tide charts are on the counter at Scott's; take that old one with the bent
corners off the refrige and get a nice clean one put up in its place.
Spring is a little late this year
What everyone was waiting for finally happened. Spring is here, but we
sure can't tell by the ice on the puddles this morning! Most people are
talking about uncovering the boats and that's about all that's getting
done...talking. To windy, to chilly; at least its not snowing.
Fishing Regulations
The fish regulations are mostly the same as last year, or so the
Division of Fish, Game, & Wildlife tells us. There are some pending
changes that should be finalized in April, so the salt water
regulations will not be available 'till around May 1. If you have any
specific requests on current fish sizes, you can call Nacote Creek
Station at 748-2020. The people there are very nice and helpful.
Free Fresh Water Fishing Regualtions
Stop by Scott's for a freee copy of the fresh water fishing regulations.
Fishing Licenses and Stamps
Scott's also has the fishing licenses and stamps. Yes, the clamming and
crab pot licenses are at Scott's as well. Guess what??? All the prices
are the same as last year, they did not go up.
Winter Flounder
Winter flounder are the next fish to really turn on here locally.
Some of our best flounder fishermen have scrapped plans to try fishing
on this windy Saturday, rescheduling for Sunday afternoon. The low
tide is late in the afternoon and that seems to add a degree of warmer
water to get the fish really biting. The fishing area that has been
the most reliable is near East and Middle Sedge islands which is
approximately one mile northwest of 108 marker buoy in the inland
waterway of Little Egg Harbor Bay (Tuckerton Bay). In the past few
years, the flounder fishing was well underway by this time in March
with catches of 10+ fish per trip. All we need is some cooperation
from mother nature with the weather.
