It's not my fault, I know I said last week "at least it's not snowing" but
that
didn't last! Gladly for us here in south Jersey, our sleet turned to rain!
Another week of cold weather did not bring up our water temperature which
is hovering around 43 degrees. The magic number for water temperature is
45 degrees; that's when we see an increase in our fishing activity.
I left you hanging on the Winter Flounder possibilities last week and feel
I should fill you in on what happened or didn't happen. The Tuckerton Bay
fishing along East Sedge and Middle Sedge Islands did not produce a fish.
The weather conditions were right, the tide was right but the water
temperature still has those bay fish shut off. There were a couple of
flounder caught by land based fishermen at the 6th street bulkhead in Ship
Bottom and there were a few flounders being caught off the route 9 bridge
in Forked River. The water temperature at the route 9 bridge is a little
warmer due to the out-flow of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant.
Winter flounders are caught off the bridge even in the early cold days of
March.

Note: There is no slack low tide on Monday morning. It changes 13 minutes
to late, which puts it in the afternoon(pm) slot! That's what that --
(Dash) means on those tide charts. I hope not to waste all this space each
week with tidal information and get a tide chart posted separately each
month on adifferent page.
The quantity of keeper stripers off Graveling Point is now TWO. Yea, I
know, not to much to get excited about, but at least there were two fish
dinners. The first striper was Ed Varga's on March 22, 13lbs, 33". The
Second keeper was caught by John Campbell, 17lbs 6oz, 33". Both fish were
caught on bloodworms. We have heard of some really good spurts of short
stripers, 18-24" range being caught. The quiet times still outweigh the
busy times. We have also had some reports of some Mullica River stripers
being caught. The fishermen have not been to specific as to where. In
the past, the best spot to try fishing has been Clarks Landing which is off
Clarks Landing Road, in Egg Harbor City; a little North West of Port
Republic. This is the first area that produces fish on lures. A rebel
J2002s which is jointed and black and gold is the best producer. The
colors of the lure match a lot of the bait fish stained by the cedar water.
I will continue to ramble on about Stripers because that's what's hot in March. There were some striper rumors from the Delaware river. Its the same kind of thing over there as it is here...mostly shorts. Hopefully, as the fishing gets better I can provide a little more specifics. There were also some short stripers caught on Long Beach Island on clams, kinda up by the Barnegat Light House...again sorry about the lack of specifics.
Hey!!! In 1996 you need a tuna permit. If you already have a Atlantic
Bluefin Tuna permit, you're already covered. Now, to catch and keep any
tuna you need to get this free Atlantic Tuna permit. You can stop by the
store and pick one up, send a self addressed-stamped envelope and we will
mail you one, or call:(508) 281 9305. I recommend that you call the
National Marine Fisheries Service and try to get a regulation sheet with
the current sizes and permitted catch quantities as well as open seasons.
