Stripers
Stripers, stripers, STRIPERS!!! For those of you who fished
Graveling Point last Saturday and Sunday and didn't get a bite, get
back here. The fishing seemed to turn on during the Monday rain
storm. Earl Biddy of Mystic Island weighed in a 10 pound 12 ounce 31"
Striper during the worst of the rain. It was hard to tell who was
wetter the fish or Earl. NOW, that's dedication! Tom Farrell weighed
in a just barely keeper 8 pound 9 ounce 28 1/2" bass on April 4th.
The smaller stripers are the best table fare due to their sweeter
meat. Flip back those larger breeders. There has been a good bite
during the evening hours; 4pm to 7pm. Largest fish is only 33" that
has been reported to our store. There were some rumors of bigger
fish, however, they were late at night and not weighed in. Most of
the striped bass being caught are short fish(under 28" which is the
legal size limit-2 per person). I am not sure that the tide matters,
but because it may make a difference; the best fishing was dead low
tide and the first few hours of the incoming water. There is some
talk of the bait stealing crabs, so it is recommended to have a few
pompano style rigs with floats on hand. A few people have tried clams
for bait, but it seems that the Stripers only want the bloodworms.
Night fishing is made easier with the use of cyalume light
sticks. These little things are a night surf fishermen dream come
true. The 1" long plastic sticks have a tiny glass tube inside of
them that breaks when stick is bent. This allows the two chemicals to
mix. The chemical stick glows for about eight hours. Attaching the
light stick to the tip of the surf rod with tape or wire ties allows
the fishermen to see even the tiniest of bites without getting a stiff
neck or strained eyes. For a more permanent solution, a small battery
operated light can be attached to the rod and be used over and over
again.
Winter Flounder
Winter flounder are not here yet. The best of the best
flounder pounders were foiled again. High hook in Tuckerton Bay is
one! Soon, the warmer water will be here. I hope.
Trout Season Begins
Saturday April 6th is here already. At 8:00am all trout beware.
There are very few places to fish in this area for trout. The two
most local places are Hammonton Lake in Hammonton and Birch Grove Park
Pond in Northfield. Birch Grove is a great place to take the kids.
Each year they sponsor a mini- tournament. The gates at the park open
at 6:00am. Registration starts at 7:00am. Fishing for prizes is
8:00am to 12:00 noon. For more info call the park at 609 641 3778.
Yes, fishing licenses and trout stamps are required for persons age 14
to 69. The fee for Jr/Sr resident license(age 14,15 and 65- 69)and
stamp is $15.50. The regular adult resident fishing license and stamp
fee is $24.25. We have plenty of licenses and stamps in stock. What
to fish with changes with each anglers opinion. In stock now are meal
worms, wax worms, small garden worms, night crawlers, grass shrimp and
minnows. Good luck trout anglers!
Crabs
Crabs are not out of the mud yet. There are a few stone crabs
being caught in traps in the lagoons closest to the bay, but not
enough for a meal. As the water temperature climbs so will the
quantity of crabs.
Pickerel
Local fresh water fishing is providing fun fishing for small
pickerel. The easiest way to catch one is to cast out a minnow and
retrieve it slowly. I have heard of a few smallmouth bass moving
about, but not in any quantity or of any size. I guess all the fish
are waiting for the water temperature to rise.
