It's Spring but...

Ok, it's officially Spring!!! The laughing gulls are out in force. Throw some food out in the yard and the sky fills with birds. With the arrival of the birds follows mackerel; about 1 week. The mackerel usually are caught off Atlantic City by the fourteenth of April. I haven't heard of a mackerel! Enough said. Here it is one month past the beginning of the winter flounder run in Tuckerton Bay; high hook is still one. Enough said!

Stripers

Here it is the prime striper catching time at Graveling Point and YES it is.

There were some newspaper reports of four stripers per person; well its not that good. Yes, a few fishermen have caught four on a trip to the point, but that is not usually the case. The best time has been in the evening. If had to pick two hours I'd say between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. There are a few fish caught during the morning and afternoon with long periods of inactivity between bites.

Our minnow traps are catching tiny blue claw crabs; a sign that it's not going to be to long before the switch to pompano style rigs with floats. Congratulations to Steven Knott. On his ninth birthday, April 5, 1996, he landed his first keeper striper. Lenny Senkarik toted in his 8 pound 14 ounce bass on the 10th of April. Jamie Gallagher slapped a 15 pound 9 ounce striper on our scale on the 11th. This past week there has been a very good ratio of keepers to shorts.

Bottom Fishing

Last weekend I received my first report of Blackfish. Captain Joel Mick of the charter boat Evelyn Anne in Port Republic(609) 652-9241 had a successful trip. The catch was good for this time of year, but was about 1/4 of his normal take-home of fish. Largest tautog was about 10 pounds and had a couple of cod to sweeten the box. The blackfish were barely sucking in the clams, which made it difficult to detect bites. As the water warms up so will the blackfishing.

Bluefish & Gnats on the way!

Twelve more days 'till bluefish??? Yes, that's right. Last year Ed Varga brought in the $100.00 bluefish caught off Graveling Point. The bluefish weighed 1 pound 14oz and was caught on April 24. Each year Scott's B&T sponsors a $100.00 prize for the first striper and the first bluefish caught off Graveling Point or Mystic Beach. Good luck all anglers!

Do you know what also bites at the same time the bluefish start biting? Let's just say you better get all those outside projects done soon. Either that or hope for breezy days or stock up on bug spray. It's hard to believe, but the gnats will be here in two weeks!

Odd and Ends

Hey, I know I'm jumping a little ahead on this one, but the next firearm hunting education class is June 11th and 13th at the Waretown firehouse. An application must be filled out in advance to register for the class. Stop in and ask for a hunting education registration form.

In case some of you missed this about the tuna permits, I am including it again this week. In 1996 you need a tuna permit. If you already have a Atlantic Bluefin Tuna permit, you're already covered. Now, to catch and keep any tuna you need to get this free Atlantic Tuna permit. You can stop by the store and pick one up, send a self addressed-stamped envelope and we will mail you one, or call:(508) 281 9305. I recommend that you call the National Marine Fisheries Service and try to get a regulation sheet with the current sizes and permitted catch quantities as well as open seasons.

Crabs are not out of the mud yet. There are a few stone crabs being caught in traps in the lagoons closest to the bay, but not enough for a meal. As the water temperature climbs so will the quantity of crabs.
