Blue Fish
Flash,
blues start through Barganet Inlet Saturday May 4th
The fish of the week is Mr. Bluefish! When a guy gets on a roll, watch
out! The chatter at Graveling Point is "Let's rename this place to Varga
Point." If you haven't guessed it yet, Ed Varga, weighed in our first bluefish,
3 pounds, 20". This is the third $100.00 gift certificate that Ed has won in a
row. Ed is looking forward to the spring of '97 in anticipation of catching the
first Striper and claiming a forth victory. Ed knows his stuff! He purchased
a mackerel, knowing that it was the right bait to lure the blues. An hour
later,
he walked though he door with a sand covered, lively bluefish. Before the
day was done, he had seven. Congratulations Ed.
Striper
The striper activity at Graveling Point has not let up one bit. There is
still
a very large ratio of small throwback fish to the occasional keeper though.
So if you enjoy catching fish, this is still the best place to be. There are
still
some slow periods when there are no fish being caught. The brightest sunny
days slow down the activity. It may be that the sun spooks the fish out of the
shallow water. There has been some good fishing after dark too. Many
stripers have been caught on strips of mackerel by anglers fishing for
bluefish; so keep that mackerel bait handy!
Boat Fishing
Many more boats are in the water now. They have heard about the "Great
Mullica Run" and want to be a part of it. So they tend to crowd the bank at
Graveling Point. The guys at the point are trying to cast to the deeper water.
With the boat, it is easy to anchor out into the deeper water where the better
spots to fish the Bass and Blues are. The key to catching fish from the boat
is to simulate surf conditions; no moving lines. Some days this may require
two anchors. Don't forget there is a big bay out there, with many more
reports of stripers coming out of Grassey Channel and the Inland Waterway
each day.
Fluke
Fluke are here! I wish I could say that it is as good as the Bass fishing.
The few fish that were caught were from the Inland Waterway near 139
marker. Drifting squid and minnows on a standard fluke rig and mackerel
strips on 1/4 ounce white bucktails did the trick.
