Weakfish
What's happening this week? Well, I think the most noteworthy
information is the appearance of weakfish. Most of the weakfish caught so
far have pretty much been kept a secret. Now the word is out. The first
place to look is in the mouth of the Mullica River. There was a good report
of the fish in deeper water. A fish finder is a benefit to help locate the pods
of fish. Since the water is still cooler, 62 degrees, it is recommended to
anchor the boat and wait these fish out. Several techniques can be used to
catch 'em. The best bait is shedder crabs (a long story-I will explain in
detail
next week), squid strips soaked in shedder oil, bloodworms, and grass
shrimp. A small gold bait holder hook top and bottom rig with about a 2
ounce sinker is recommended. We just happen to custom make such a rig.
We call it a number 70, because that's the number we gave it in the computer.
It doesn't look like much, but this rig is a real producer. Most of the
weakfish in the mouth of the Mulica River have been about 15" long. Larger
fish have been caught in the mouth of Oyster Creek and Motts Creek.
Smaller bucktails, 1/8 and 1/4 ounce with long slender strips of mackerel
belly or squid strips soaked in shedder oil are good producers when jigged
repeatedly. The plastic worm and jig head sales have picked up this week,
but I have had no report on how well they are working. Remember, the early
angler catches the weakfish.
Fluke
If you want a nice relaxing day of fishing, this weekend is going to
provide the best weather for catching fluke. Calmer winds -so the
weatherman has said- will provide good drifting conditions. The best areas
to fish have still been around the 139 marker buoy in the Inland Waterway.
Try drifting about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile toward Oyster Creek from the marker.
Best bet would be to get away from all the boats. Another good location
again this week was in the clam stakes on the north side of the fish factory.
Squid and minnows are still the best choices for bait.
Crabbing
Crabbing is still so-so. Most crabbers are reporting the same thing; lots
of
small ones. The crabbing in the creeks has not really started this year; cold
water may be a factor. Most of the crab reports are all coming from
recreational lagoon crabbers.
Gnats
Gnats! Cough, hack, choke. Keep the bug spray handy. Ever here of
Avon Skin So Soft? It is a body oil that just happens to be a great bug
repellent. I got a great tip last year from one of my customers and I'll pass
it
on to you. Go purchase a plant sprayer at any garden center and dilute the
SSS with denatured alcohol to a 50/50 mixture. It thins the oil and the
sprayer applies it nicely with no the mess. The SSS is the best choice for
using on small children and pets. Beware!!! The SSS and other repellants
will also work as fish repellants, so keep it off the bait and lures.
Bluefish
There are still bluefish in the bay. The fish are from 1 to 3 pounds now,
like our normal spring size bluefish should be. Most of the reports are
coming from the charter boats that are trolling in Little Egg Inlet early in the
morning. All the boat activity seems to scatter the fish by 7:30 in the
morning. There were a few good periods of activity on Graveling Point and
Pebble Beach this week fishing for the blues with cut mackerel strips on float
rigs. So surf fishermen don't give up yet!
Fluke Tournament
Last weekend was the Jersey Coast Anglers Association fluke tournament.
This tournament was a state wide tournament offering ten $1000.00 first
place prizes for the largest single fluke weighed in selected weigh stations
throughout the state. The largest fluke caught were up in the Manasquan area
weighing in at 6 pounds 13 ounces and 6 pounds even. The three winners at
Scott's are: First place: David Brown-4 pounds 14 ounces, 23 1/8", $1000.00
JCAA prize winner. Second place:Bill Massara-2 pounds 14 ounces, 19
1/8", $135 Scott's sponsored Penn rod and reel combo. Third place:Theresa
Kohler-2 pounds 12ounces 19 3/4", Penn Reels sponsored a Penn 310GTi
reel. Overall, the tournament went well and everybody seemed to have a
good time.
