Fluke Fishing
It's been a good week of fluke fishing with many boats reporting
catches from every part of the bay. There was a lot of fog in the
mornings and it forced anglers to fish some pretty interesting places.
I've heard of fluke caught just outside the stakes in front of Great
Bay Marina and a 1/4 mile outside Big Creek. Most fishermen are using
squid and minnows on their favorite rig. I say favorite rig, because
this week it seemed every type and method worked. If you want to try
something new, a few customers agreed on a double squid squirt Top and
Bottom rig.
Shark Fishing
Good news for evening bay shark fishermen; the toothy critters
are here. Brown sharks have made an appearance in the Great Bay. The
few that I have heard caught, have been by fluke fishermen working the
Grassey Channel area. The real way to fish for brown sharks is to
anchor and chum in the area of 138 buoy. The best time is in the
evening as the sun sets. The action really starts up after the sun
has gone down, but there is still a glimmer of daylight and lasts
until around 10pm. A good size brown shark is about five feet long
and weighs about fifty pounds. The shark can be filleted much like a
bluefish. A huge fillet will then need to be cut into palm size
fillets similar in the way that a London broil steak would be cut.
The rig used in the bay is a 9/0 mustad hook on 45 pound steel leader.
No weights or floats are necessary. Just cast a chunk of mackerel
fillet into the sunset and sit back and have a good time.
Weakfish
Where are the weakfish? Basically, the same old story here. The
mouth of the Mulica River; anchor and fish a small hook top and bottom
rig with pieces of shedder crab. Persistence will put some weakfish
in the fish box. Lack of reports from other areas of the bay do not
mean that the fish aren't there. If you have a favorite weakfish
spot, it's worth a try. We have lots of shedders, and if you don't
know much about them, be sure to pick up a copy of the June 6
bulletin. It's in there!
Father's Day
Sunday, June 16 is Fathers Day! But, there isn't one single
thing dad needs because he's got enough stuff in the shed and garage
that it's starting to overflow into the living room! He is a great
candidate for a gift certificate. A Scott's Bait & Tackle gift
certificate is great, because it can be used a little at a time. We
just keep a running total on the back, which allows many little bait
purchases or those little extras that he says that he needs more of,
rather than having to come in and spend it all at once.
