Big Bertha

The number one question this day is "What's up with the storm?". Bertha is the first Hurricane that worried us here on the East coast this 1996 season. At the time of writing this report, all pressure of serious local flooding is off. Bertha has moved inland and will continue to wreck havoc with strong winds and sporadic thunderstorms.

Large low pressure systems and a lot of rain can dramatically effect the fishing. As the low pressure systems approach many fish will feed aggressively and as the storm passes, the fish usually stop biting for a few days if water conditions are adversely effected. Rough water and dirty water or Mullica River water with a greater concentration of fresh water will change where a fish will stay as well as its feeding pattern. So what does all this mean?, one may ask. Basically, I have to say its a wait and see game at this point.

Fluke

This past week has been a very productive for many anglers. There were a few more large fluke caught by weakfisherpersons in the mouth of the Mullica River. Mimi Johnston proudly carried in her 7 pound 3 ounce, 27" fluke on July 7, and Bob Gray lugged in his 5 pound 14 ounce, 24" fluke on July 10. Both of these fish were caught during successful weakfishing trips.

Weakfish

The weakfishing this past week has been great. The best fishing has been in the mouth of the Mulica River during the morning hours from 4:30am 'till about 9:00am. A few weakies are being caught in this area right on through the day but, the action is much slower. Drifting is the best method of covering ground to catch weakfish. A slow drift is recommended. If you are drifting fast, either slow the drift down or if that is not possible, it's time to drop the anchor. Fishing with many different rigs, worms, jigs, shad darts and bucktails have all worked well to providing good catches. Pick your favorite, add the shedder crab bait or shedder oil and put weakies in the fish box. A couple of things to be said about the weakies in the box: First, the regulations are 14 fish at a minimum size of 14" per person. Second, weakfish are the fastest bay fish to spoil if they are not kept on ice in a cooler. The fish gets very mushy and difficult to clean if it is warm for too long. Also, a properly cooled weakfish is much better food; mushy weakfish tend to start to taste like 15 pound bluefish!

Hard to talk fishing with bertha hogin' the scene. I am real glad she isn't going to visit!
