Weakfish

Wow, there are a lot a weakfish in the Mouth of the Mullica River! Most of the fish are being caught in the morning hours between 4:30am and 9:00am. Fish like to feed during the hours of less daylight, dawn or dusk and sometimes will feed all day long if it is overcast or foggy. Also, there seems to be increased feeding activity during the slack flood (the last of incoming water) tide and the first few hours of the ebbing tide (outgoing water). These are general statements that can be made about most species of fish and there are always exceptions. The average size of the weakfish has been from twelve inches to twenty inches. The ratio of throwback size weakies (<14") has been about a 5:1. This is figuring in the size limit at fifteen inches. A lot of anglers are throwing back fifteen inch fish and under to reduce the amount of fish they have had to clean when getting back to the dock. Hooray for them. Now, the big question is....How do we catch 'em. The shedder crab bait has definitely out fished any other bait or tackle choice out there.

If you are not familiar with shedders ask for our print-out of the June 6th bulletin...all about shedders or if you surf the Internet check out the June 6th bulletin.

However, many customers have had very successful trips with squid strips and shedder oil. I even heard that the weakies were eating minnows off shad darts. If you have a favorite way of catching the weaks, try it. My favorite way to fish shedder bait is on a small hook bait rig with a small 1-2 ounce hopkins or crippled herring metal lure as a sinker. It is not necessary to bait the metal jig. It is amazing just how many fish can be caught on a lure that replaces a sinker. Drifting shad darts and bucktails with shedder or shedder oil and squid is very popular method too. I have also noticed the sharpies(the guys that eat/sleep/drink fishing) buying a lot more plastic worms and jig heads this week. They're definitely doing that for a reason. The mouth of the Mulica River isn't the only place in Great Bay that weakies are being caught. It is the most productive area but does not necessarily hold the larger weakfish. Little Sheepshead Creek which runs from the Fish Factory to the inside of Tuckers Island has always been a good producer of weakfish. There are several deep holes and ledges that create areas where weakies like to hang out. A fish finder is a very useful tool in Little Sheepshead Creek. Look for fish, find fish, catch fish, and most importantly remember where, how and when. No fish finder??? No problem. Spot a sharpie! Maybe he/she is not around. Look for other boats and study exactly what they are doing and where they are doing it. The largest clue to determine if anglers on a boat are catching fish is that they will always be standing up and very many times they will be holding at least one rod if not two. Relaxing fishermen are doing just that, relaxing and that is great after a long week at the office. Who wants to clean all those fish in the hot sun and all those green flies anyway?

Fluke

Catching a fluke this weekend is likely to be difficult. There has been a lot of cold water in the bay from the storm and the dominantly westerly wind patterns that we have been experiencing. It's pretty much the same old story here. Fish real shallow water and focus your efforts on the last couple of hours of ebbing tide. AHHH, an exception already. The lower tide has more back bay water and water that was in the river and all the creeks which has been warmed by the land mass. On occasion, this will stir the fluke into a short feeding period. I had several customers tell me that the fluking was pretty good right up until the tide turned and started to come in. I'll bet they weren't sitting down. A good place to start would be in the stakes between Mystic Island and the fish Factory; in the area with the large pink ball with the radar reflector on it.
