Weakfish
Yup, the weakfish are still everywhere. The best quantities of
fish are still being caught in the mouth of the Mullica River during
the morning hours. The fishing in this area has seemed to slow down
as the boating traffic picks up. There are plenty of weakfish around.
Some anglers are fishing in the middle of the bay. It doesn't make
any sense to me, but weakfish have been caught one mile out of Great
Bay Marina toward 139 buoy, kinda in the middle of nowhere. Other
weakfish are being caught in the deeper water areas of Grassy Channel.
Small jig heads 1/8 & 1/4 ounce with purple worms with red tails are a
good bet in Grassey. Be sure to soak the worms in shedder oil or tip
the jig with a little shedder crab bait. The Mouth of Oyster and
Motts Creek have been producing a little bit larger weakies on the
outgoing tides.
Crabs
Good news for crabbers. A blue moon just passed on July 31. A
blue moon is an occurrence of two full moons in one month. Crabs shed
on full moons, which means that they get bigger. By talking to a few
of the crabbers this week, I have learned that there is a very good
quantity of crabs in the shedder stage. That means lots of crabs are
about to get bigger!
Blowfish & Weakfish
I was hoping to get some good news about blowfish and kingfish in
the bay this week, but the weather had most of the anglers staying at
the dock and I did not received any report.
Sharks
There are still some lingering brown sharks in the bay for the
evening fisherman in the Grassey Channel area. If you have any
interest, grab some chum and some mackerel and head out into the bay
about seven in the evening. The best time for sharking in the bay is
after the sun has dropped behind the trees and it's still daylight
until around ten at night. The sharks seem to feed best during this
time period.
Fluke
It has been hard to figure the fluke out. They are feeding and
then they are not. I believe that the fluctuating water temperature
is making them a difficult fish to catch. The best fluke catching
reports are from still in the bay. Most of the good catches of fluke
are occurring in the area of the Fish Factory. The Pink marker ball
in the clam stakes on the North West side of the Fish Factory has
still been a good place to start a few drifts. Some anglers are
drifting between the islands around the Factory and are coming up with
fair catches(6 to 8 fish). The more aggressive fishermen are short
drifting the sandbars from shallow water back into the deep water.
Fluke like to wait in these areas for baitfish to be washed over to
them by the tide.
