Webmaster Goofed
I put last weeks bulletin up without changing the date. Sorry for the
confusion.
Snappers
Snappers are in the lagoons. Most of the fish are from 6" and
down. Best way to catch 'em is with a small hook with a little piece
of spearing or with little minnows for bait. Fish the surface with a
plastic float on the line about 18" above the hook. Casting and
retrieving a minnow also works well. Beware, larger weakfish up to
19" in the were caught in lagoons this week. These not so weakfish
will pull small unattended snapper rods and reels into the water.
Evening fishing with the kids for snappers is fun for all!
Weakfish
Where have all the weakies gone??? Catching weakfish this week
has become a little more difficult. Either the fish have become a
little more picky or are scattered more around the bay than in the
mouth of the Mullica river. Early bird anglers--the guys who have
been fishing since 4:30 am--are still catching good numbers of
weakfish. After 7:00 in the morning, the activity slows down. If you
still want to catch weakfish, but Saturday and Sunday are the only
days of the week that you do not have to get up before the sun-- and
you aren't, that's OK because there are other places to try to catch
weakfish during a reasonable hour of the day. First place to try is
the ocean side of the bridge in Little Sheepshead creek. If you have
a depth finder, it can really be useful here. Scan the creek for fish
in holes or along the bank where the water drops off real fast.
Weakfish like this kind of structure. If you don't have the
electronics, drift Little Sheepshead Creek and pay attention to where
you get bites. This is important for any type of fishing. Repeatedly
drift the same area and it is likely that you will catch more fish out
of the same school. Take your time and idle the boat, and if
possible, circle the area where you had the action. Many anglers are
not patient enough and run the engine full throttle over the school of
fish scattering them and most likely spooking the fish so they will
not feed anymore. There are weakfish in Grassey Channel. Fish the
Grassy weakies with bucktails with long strips of squid cut the width
of a shoelace. Either soak the squid strips in shedder oil or put a
touch of shedder bait on the bucktail to increase productivity. Jig
heads with 6" plastic worms with a piece of shedder have been working
well too. When fishing with the jig heads and bucktails, don't use
any snap swivels or other type of terminal tackle. Tie the fishing
line straight to the lure to avoid spooking the fish.
Fluke
Fluke are still in bay. I know a lot of you fishermen out there
want the fish in the ocean; you must have stock in gas companies, but
the better fishing has been in the area of the Fish Factory and the
Rutgers Marine Research Facility(Old coast Guard Station). Drifting
squid and minnows on top & bottom rigs are a very good choice of bait
and rig in these deeper water areas. The largest fluke weighed in
this week was an 11 pound 1 ounce 28 1/2" fluke caught by Jim
Surdykowski in the area of Tuckers Island. We also had a 5 pound 14
ounce fluke caught in the area of the Fish Factory by Jim Hagstrom.
Good job Jims! =)
