Webmaster Goofed
I put last weeks bulletin up without changing the date. Sorry for the
confusion.
Snappers
Snappers are in the lagoons. Most of the fish are from 6" and
down. Best way to catch 'em is with a small hook with a little piece
of spearing or with little minnows for bait. Fish the surface with a
plastic float on the line about 18" above the hook. Casting and
retrieving a minnow also works well. Beware, larger weakfish up to
19" in the were caught in lagoons this week. These not so weakfish
will pull small unattended snapper rods and reels into the water.
Evening fishing with the kids for snappers is fun for all!
Difficult Weekend Ahead
A difficult weekend of catching is ahead. However, that will make a
real relaxing day of fishing, cleaning the boat, and cleaning the
fish. A lot of things contribute to making fishing good or bad. This
week we have a couple of bad things. First, was a rainy week with
lots of fresh water pouring into the Mullica River, the weakies are
still there on the fish finder, but they are being very picky about
biting those hooks. Second, is a fluctuating water temperature as
much as five degrees. The changing water temperature can shut a
period of fish biting right off with a change of tide. You know how
it goes " a bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at
work"! and if you stay home, you might end up painting the kitchen
like the wife has been after you to do for two years now!
Fluke
For the ocean going anglers, the Atomic lump(26910&43100) has
produced a few fluke. Not real hot and heavy catching out here yet,
but it seems like it is getting started. Also had a fluke report from
the Little Egg Reef Site(26920&43100...aprox. 3 miles East of the
Little Egg Bell Buoy). The key in both places was to drift squid and
minnows on a top and bottom rig. The reef site also produced 1/2 to
1-1/2 pound sea bass; a tasty treat.
Bluefish
Bluefish are pretty scarce. The only sure area has been the
Barnegat Ridge South(26775&43205...25 ENE of the Little Egg Bell
Buoy). Bait fishing with mackerel and large quantities of bunker chum
are necessary here for good steady bluefish action.
Let the Kids Catch Some Fish
There is plenty of action for anglers that need to entertain the
kids. Anchor the boat in the deep water slew in the area of the pink
ball which is in the clam stakes on the Mystic Island side of the Fish
factory. Best fishing would be a couple of hours before low tide when
the water would be its warmest and slowest. Throw a chum pot over
with clam chum in it. You will catch a lot of little sea bass. It is
possible to catch a few kingfish, porgys, blowfish and weakfish. To
actively try to catch weakies attracted to your chum slick by the
activity of all the little fish, cast out a plastic float with a shad
dart lure baited with a piece of shedder crab. If you are fishing in
seven feet of water, place the shad dart six feet below the float so
that it is suspended about a foot off the bottom. Many nice weakies
are caught this way. Best bait to fish the other fish with include
clam strips, squid strips, shedders, and bloodworms.
