Pink Ball
What is this pink ball you are always talking
about? The pink ball is approximately a three foot round plastic
ball with a radar reflector on it. It was put in the bay by one of
the local anglers to mark the beginning of a deep water channel
short-cut from the Mystic Island side of the bay over to the deep
water in front of the burned out bulkhead side of the Fish Factory.
If you leave Big Creek and drive the boat toward the Fish Factory, you
will see the pink ball just inside all of the clam stakes. From the
pink ball, steer the boat toward a double arm telephone pole which is
on the marsh in front of little sheepshead creek. At low tide this
channel may be to shallow for larger boats; NAVIGATE WITH CAUTION!
Kingfish
The kingfish are here! The best fishing has been in the area of
the clam stakes where the pink ball is. Some anglers anchored the
boat and fished with chum and clam strips for bait. Other successful
anglers fished while the boat was drifting with bloodworms. I
recommend either method that works to catch the kingfish. The
preferred bait for kingfish is the bloodworms. Shedders and clam
strips are also a good choice of bait. Fish with a double small hook
rig with about 1 to 2 once weights. Be alert that these fish are
pretty strong for there size and may actually pull small fishing rods
overboard. The average keeper kingfish is about 1 pound. A large
kingfish is one that is over 20" and weighs about two pounds. A
kingfish looks like a fresh water sucker or kind of like a saltwater
whiting. It is a brown fish with darker brown stripes down its sides
and is shaped pretty much like a weakfish. Why should you care??? If
you ask that question, you have never eaten kingfish; they are
excellent table fare. Kingfish smaller than 12" should be thrown back
to grow up for there isn't much meat on fish this small. There is no
New Jersey size limit or quantity limit on kingfish. Mixed in with
the kingfish are some porgies, sea bass and other miscellaneous bottom
fish found in Great Bay.
Weakfish
There are two weakfish tournaments in Great Bay this weekend.
One is the Red Men Lodge in Tuckerton and the other is the Chestnut
Neck boatyard tournament. This means that all of my good information
on weakies was hush hush and don't give away any secrets this week.
All I can say about the Weakies is that there is not as many in the
bay as there was two weeks ago. The mouth of the Mullica River is a
good place to start looking. A deapth/fish finder is very useful now.
Try to locate small pods of weakies before actually trying to fish for
them. Some better fishing was further up the river form the hunting
shack. Try fishing around the bend past the shack in the deeper
water. As weakfish get tougher to catch, the real shedder crab bait
will put more fish in the box. For you ocean going anglers, large
schools of weakies are being caught between Little Egg Inlet and
Absecon Inlet. I wish I could be more specific, but the fish are
moving around. Top and Bottom rigs baited with long thin cut strips
of squid is the only bait necessary to catch ocean weakfish.
Fluke
Ocean going Fluke fishermen are happy. Many anglers are
reporting good catches of offshore fluke. A good place to start
fishing is right at the Little Egg Bell Buoy. From this location, you
can work your way north east and drift the area of the Atomic Lump and
the Little Egg Reef Site. The better fishing this week was in deeper
water from 35 to 50 feet. Don't spend too much time in an area not
catching fish. Many anglers fished on the shallower water of the
Atomic Lump right around the yellow research buoys and did not catch a
whole lot of fish. Move around and if you have a loran or GPS machine
and catch a few fluke, capture the exact coordinates and repeatedly
drift the same school of fluke.
