Bay Weekend
It is definitely going to be a bay fishing
weekend. Large surf is already here and it is not recommended to even
try to get out the inlet. Good news that there is plenty of good
fishing in Great Bay. Fluke, weakfish and kingfish were caught in
good numbers this week.
Fluke
The best bay fluke was a 5 pound 6 ounce fish that was caught in
Grassey Channel by Mike Kurzynski. I also heard on the VFH radio that
there was some pretty good fishing in the area of 139 marker buoy for
both fluke and weakfish. Better fluke fishing has been from 126
marker buoy right on out the Little Egg Inlet. Some good fishing has
been in the deep water between the Little & Big Sheepshead Creeks and
Tuckers Island. When fishing in the deeper water, top and bottom rigs
work well when baited with squid and minnows. We finally got a new
shipment of Andrus 3/8 shad darts for fishing real thin cut squid
strips and minnows in the areas of shallower water like Grassey
Channel and the Inland waterway.
Weakfish
For some reason the weakfish are back in the mouth of the Mullica
River. It may be because of the rough ocean surf that more weakfish
came into the bay to seek shelter. Whatever the reason, Friday
morning was pretty good weakfishing. Many anglers jigged plastic
worms on weighted jig heads. Shedder crab bait is still a hot choice.
A small sliver of squid soaked in shedder crab oil can be a nice extra
scent to add to the jig heads and plastic worms.
Kingfish
Kingfish really are here. There are several good places to try
and catch them. The best and most reliable area so far is in the clam
stakes on the Mystic Island side of the Fish Factory in the area of
the pink ball. Some kingfish were also caught in front of Graveling
Point in the clam stakes. Another good location to fish for kingies
is out near 134 buoy. There is an area on the Mystic Island side of
the buoy that drops off into a little deeper water. The kingfish like
to congregate in this hole. Bloodworms are their number one favorite
bait followed by clam strips. Anchor the boat and throw over a chum
pot. Drawing fish to the boat with chum is my favorite way to try and
catch fish. This usually creates a lot of action with all kinds of
small fish like seabass, sea robins and sandsharks. A few blowfish
and porgys are also being caught.
Striper
After the storm passes and the water settles down, there will
sure to be a few more anglers in search of Mr. Striper. A few smaller
fish are already being caught here and there. We already have live
eels in stock and have been selling more and more each week. The big
problem fishing eels early is the bluefish. Bluefish love to bite
those eels in half! I wish everyone a happy and safe weekend from all
of us at Scott's Bait & Tackle.
