Scot's Leave of Absence
First thing you should know is that I took a two week leave of
absence on creative bulletin writing. The last bulletin out was
August 30, and if you remember it was right before a string of three
hurricanes. Those big stormy things make the fishing scene a little
difficult and coming up with good fishing information was asking me to
really become a creative fiction writer! Enough with the past...
Tautog
The newest arrival on the scene in Great Bay is few tautog along
the banks at the Coast Guard Station. Information is scarce as only a
few people have tried to fish for these tasty blackfish. Green crabs,
which are the best bait choice for tog sold well on Friday morning.
Hopefully, this will mean that I will have some greater detailed
information for you next week.
Fluke
There were several LARGE fluke weighed in on Friday. Largest
fish was nine pounds 8 ounces caught by Bob McRichards with a 8 pound
5 ounce follow up landed by Ed Wojak. Very nice fish guys. Both fish
were caught in the area of the Little Egg Bell Buoy. Top and bottom
rigs are the best choice of rig when fishing in the ocean. To fish a
Top and Bottom rig effectively, a heavy weight, approximately 5 ounces
is necessary. Very minimal line should be let out. Put the rod in a
rod holder and open the free spool or the bail and let the line out
until the sinker reaches the bottom. If the sinker drags continually
on the bottom, there is too much line out. Reel a few feet of line in
until the sinker skips along the bottom now and then. This will hold
the rig in a vertical position creating an upper hook and a lower
hook. If you let the line out like a regular single hook fluke rig,
you end up with two hooks dragging the bottom. Fish may be caught by
both methods, so don't be afraid to experiment. Bait the rigs with
long thin cut strips of squid and a minnow.
Weakfish
The weakfish are in the bay as well as out in the ocean. Some
fish were caught in Grassey Channel this week on white plastic worms
on lead head jigs baited with shedder crab bait. As the fall
approaches, the large number of blue claw crabs generally stop
shedding. Most commercial crabbers pull their gear and shedders
become scarce. The few that are still around usually go to the top
bidders which is the food markets. This means that we only have
frozen shedders to sell. They are still a very good bait, but when
cleaning frozen shedders it is harder to get as many baits. If you
are searching for weakies, check out the west side of Great Bay from
139 buoy over to Oyster Creek. Some good quality fish are still
hanging out in this area. Fish with live mullet, bunkers, or spot to
land one of these lunkers.
We are still on our summer hours for the month of September.

Friday 5:30am to 9:00pm
