Great Bay Fishing
A very interesting fishing week here in the Great Bay. The best
fishing was still out on the ocean for both fluke and weakfish. Yet,
the bay produced a few weakies, fluke, kingfish and stripers as well
as some tautog and triggerfish.
Weakfish
The weakfish were caught in several locations on bloodworms and
frozen shedder crabs. Jig heads and white worms are still landing the
weakies for many anglers. Morning and evening fishing in the Mouth of
the Mulica River and the Mouths of Oyster Creek and Motts Creek on the
west side of Great Bay are good places to start fishing. A few fish
are being caught by bank fishermen at the end of Radio Road commonly
known as Graveling Point. Marshelder Channel in Tuckerton Bay is
putting out some very nice size weakies along the south bank and
drifting over the top of the Brick Pile. You have to get up pretty
early to fish this area for it can get very busy with boat traffic.
Kingfish
The kingfish are thinning out. There are still enough numbers in
the bay around the pink ball and over by 134 marker buoy to still make
a trip.
Bludfish
Bluefish are not being real cooperative at being caught at this
early point in the fall. Smaller bluefish are making it difficult to
drift the live eels in the inlet, but are difficult to catch if you
actually wanted to pursue them. As the water cools, the larger
bluefish will return in greater numbers.
Tautog
Tautog are being caught along the banks at the fish Factory and
the Coast Guard Station. There are not too many of them though. The
better time to fish for tog is about an hour and a half before a tide
change when the water isn't moving too fast. Anchor the boat with two
anchors to keep the boat still. You must be right over a ledge near
the marsh bank. Tautog are hanging in holes or lying on small ledges
along the drop-offs and must have fresh green crab baits stuck right
in front of their nose! Tog must be 12" to be a legal size fish to
keep this year.
Triggerfish
A few surprise triggerfish are being caught while fishing for the
tog. Triggerfish look kind-of like a fresh water angel fish.
Triggers are very good tasting fish. Make sure you have a very sharp
knife, because they have the toughest skin you have ever tried to cut
through. A cleaning trick is to poke a hole in the skin with a real
thin knife and cut the skin from the inside out.
Fluke
The fluke are still being caught in good numbers on the lumps out
in front of the water towers on Long Beach Island. Forty feet of
water to about sixty feet of water came most of my good reports.
Another Great place to start is the Atomic Lump (26944 & 43100...these
are the correct numbers) and the Little Egg reef sight which is about
a mile and a half east of the Atomic Lump. Top and bottom rigs are
really doing the job in this deeper water. Surely squid and minnows
is still the best bait of choice.
Sea Robins
Some very large sea robins are also being caught. Keep a large
one for dinner. Fillet the sea robin and sneak it in with the other
fillets and watch the reaction.
We are still on our summer hours for the month of September.
