Fall is Here
Mother nature has finally decided to declare fall weather. Be
advised that a few hours on the water can require hooded sweat shirts
and cotton gloves. Extra socks or boots will not be a bad idea if you
are in the class of evening striper "catchermen!"
Striper
Striper fever was reported by a few stray anglers in the past few
weeks. It seems that this germ has a very contagious nature. Striper
anglers are doubling each night and with good cause. The secret is
out; stripers are here. Now, I am not saying every boat out is
catching fish, I'm just saying the chances are getting much better.
The prime striper fishing is still coming as the water temperature
drops. Two to three weeks into October has been the trend in the past
for drifting eels in Little Egg Inlet and the surrounding areas.
Average size fish weighed in today was over 17 pounds & 35". A very
nice batch of fish. It still seems that a 4/O mustad 92553bl(black
off set hook with a turned down eye) snelled to a 4' 30 to 50 pound
test leader attached to a 1 ounce bead chain trolling sinker is still
the best choice rig. The bead chain trolling weights are a very good
product to have between your eel and the rest of your fishing line.
It will not take too long for an eel to twist up the line without a
quality snap swivel or the bead chain trolling weight. Small weight
is all that is really necessary when drifting eels. The eel will
naturally swim forward and the weight will guide him down to the
bottom. Heavier weights are necessary when drifting the very deep
water of the inlet or if the wind is creating a very fast drift. I
may get in trouble by saying exactly where to fish, but here
goes...Work the sod bank between 118 and 120 marker buoys. The bass
like to hang along this ledge. It is a very good area to drift all
fall. Drifting the fast moving currents around the 120 marker is also
a good place to work the eels. Ahh...one more very important detail,
better fishing has been at night. As the fishing improves, more fish
will be caught in the daylight hours.
White Perch
The white perch are making a showing in the mouth of the Mullica
river. It is necessary to locate schools of perch with a depth finder
and anchor the boat over them to have a very productive day. Randomly
drifting the area may produce fish. Pay close attention to where the
fish are caught and try to repeat the same drift. If fish are
consistently caught in the same spot, it's a good time to throw the
anchor. Small hook top and bottom rigs(same rigs you were using for
kingfish...A rig we commonly refer to as a number 70) baited with
bloodworms did the trick this week. Chum is not necessary for perch
fishing. Sinker weight ranges from 1 to 3 ounces. There is no size
or quantity regulations on white perch. A keeper fish is about a half
pound with a very large perch weighing in at a pound and a half.
Perch are very good table fare(food) and are cleaned the same as you
would a sea bass.
Ocean Fishing
The ocean fishing is still very productive for both fluke and
weakfish. The weakfish are closer to the beach or in shallower water
than the fluke. Find schools weakies on your fish finder just outside
the inlet or as your traveling up the beach. Fish for fluke off the
beach a little further in about a depth of 45 to 55 feet of water.
Top and bottom rigs are still the answer. Bait the rigs with squid
and minnows when fishing for fluke and just real thin strips of squid
for the weakies.
