Tuckerton, NJ

Settled in the late 1600s by Quakers and named for Ebeneezer Tucker, Tuckerton Borough retains a small-town charm enhanced by a community-wide effortto preserve historic properties.

At the same time, the governing body continues to update and improve the services required by its more than 3,000 residents. Tuckerton Creek, emptying into Little Egg Harbor and the ocean beyond was the site of a busy seaport throughout the Colonial period. Shortly after the Revolutionary War, Tuckerton was designated America's third port of entry, after New York and Philadelphia, by President George Washington.

Later in its history, the local train station was the terminus of the famed Tuckerton Railroad which traveled through several small towns on its way to Whiting Station, a hub to New York and Philadelphia. The railroad brought tourists from famous families like the Astors and Vanderbilts to factory workers and their families to the bayfront community. The train's freight cars then returned to Whiting filled with clams and oysters harvested by the local residents who proudly called, and still do today, themselves baymen. Today, the small borough (3.7 square miles) is home to a well-stocked branch of the Ocean County library, a county park (Tip Seaman Park) at the edge of Pohatcong Lake and a bayfront park at the end of South Green Street, a Green Acres Park at Willow Landing along Tuckerton Creek, the charming Tuckerton Historical Museum (which is officially over the border in Little Egg Harbor) and its proudest achievement, the Barnegat Bay Decoy & Baymen's Museum at the entrance to Tip Seaman Park.

Even more spectacular is the proposed Tuckerton Historical Seaport, a working interpretive village which, when completed, will feature replicas of notable seashore structures such as the Tucker's Island Lighthouse and the old Tuckerton Yacht Club.

Through the museum and the proposed seaport, organizers John and Tom Gormley hope to preserve Southern Ocean County traditions such as boat building, hunting, working the bay and crafting hunting decoys. These traditions are revived each year when thousands flock to town to enjoy the Old Time Barnegat Bay Decoy and Gunning Show at Tip Seaman Park and Pinelands Regional High School.

The town has a seven-member police force, a volunteer fire company, and an elementary school for grades kindergarten through six. Several marinas along Tuckerton Creek afford townspeople and visitors alike a chance to enjoy fishing, clamming, crabbing, and water sports. A merchants association is dedicated to bringing in new business to the town's charming old buildings on Main and Green Streets and sponsors holiday events each year at Halloween and Christmas. Speaking of Christmas, the borough's Christmas "tree," created from strings of lights on a floating platform on Lake Pohatcong, is a beautiful community icon, and is lighted each Thanksgiving night in a special ceremony to kick off the holiday season.

The borough is governed by Mayor Anna B. "Peg'"Jacobi, Council President James Bower, Councilwomen Elizabeth Moritz and Nancy Speck, Councilmen Thomas Gormley, Robert Butler and Benito Ventresca. The borough clerk is Grace Di Elmo, who can be reached at (609) 296-2701.
